Hojicha powder is a gently roasted Japanese green tea that is becoming increasingly appreciated in Scandinavian tea culture. It has a soft and warming flavor with roasted notes, a hint of cocoa, and a natural sweetness.

The taste is distinctly different from matcha, which is fresher and greener in character. For many trying hojicha for the first time, it feels both cozy and interesting at the same time.

Traditional hojicha

Hojicha is usually consumed as whole roasted tea leaves. The leaves are roasted over high heat until they achieve a deep chocolate brown color and a round, soft flavor. The roasting removes most of the bitterness and naturally lowers the caffeine content, making classic hojicha a popular evening tea in many Japanese homes.

When brewed traditionally, hojicha takes on a warm brown color and a mild, roasted aroma with a soothing and soft mouthfeel.

Use a round -bottomed bowl and a regular whisk, preferably as small as possible. Take a teaspoon to measure the tea and a strainer to aim the tea powder so that any lumps disappear. Pour about 0.6 deciliters of water which is about 80 degrees hot. Whisk vigorously until the drink foams. Now the drink is ready to be enjoyed! More detailed instructions are further down the page.

What makes hojicha powder special?

This product uses the same carefully roasted tea leaves, but they are ground into a fine powder, similar to matcha. This makes hojicha powder more versatile and easy to use.

  • Easy to whip and quick to prepare
  • Perfect for lattes and modern tea drinks
  • A milder alternative to matcha with a deeper roasted tone
  • Very useful in baking and cooking because it dissolves easily

When the powder is whisked with a little hot water, it forms a smooth chocolate brown paste that carries the full roasted flavor of the tea.

How to make a classic hojicha latte

Sift one to two teaspoons of hojicha powder into a bowl. Add a little hot water, about eighty degrees, and whisk until you get a smooth chocolate brown paste. Add the rest of the water and whisk until the drink has a light foam. Heat the milk of your choice, pour in and sweeten if you like.

The result is a soft and warming cup with smooth roasted cocoa tones.

How to make a stronger hojicha latte

For a deeper flavor, you can whisk together the same chocolate brown paste but skip the extra water. Strain the paste directly into hot milk. This will bring out the toasted notes and give you a fuller cup with more flavor.centrevariety of flavors.

Creative ways to use hojicha powder

Because the powder dissolves so easily and carries a soft roasted flavor, it is great to use in many different recipes.

  • Mix a teaspoon into cake or cookie dough for a roasted cocoa note
  • Stir into cream or white chocolate for mild dessert flavors
  • Use in homemade ice cream or smoothies for a warm roasted tone
  • Sprinkle over porridge or yoghurt or mix into warm milk for a peaceful morning.

A tea that fits today's everyday rituals

Hojicha powder brings warmth and tranquility to your daily teatime. Its lower caffeine content, roasted flavor, and naturally calming nature make hojicha an obvious choice for slow mornings, relaxed afternoons, and quiet evenings.

For beginners, the taste is easy to like, and for experienced tea drinkers it offers something new while preserving its traditional origins.
