In Japanese, "chashaku" translates to "teaspoon". Chashaku was originally a Chinese innovation. It was originally intended as a standard, general purpose dispensing spoon. Early chashakus were made of metal and ivory, or some combination of the two. When the design was introduced to Japan during the Muromachi period (circa 14th and 15th centuries), it was used specifically as a tea powder spoon. However, ivory was too fragile and the metal spoons too wide.
Since then, chashakus have evolved from other types of wood. But most common chashakus are made of bamboo. In terms of design, they are made from a narrow piece carved from bamboo.
